Exploitation of neighbouring subsoil for nutrient acquisition under annual-perennial strip intercropping systems

چکیده

Little is known how the deep root systems of perennial crops contribute to deeper and better resource use when intercropped with annuals in arable fields. Therefore, we aimed at measuring capacity deep-rooted perennials, alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) curly dock Rumex crispus access nutrients located under neighboring 1.0 2.5 m soil depth. Alfalfa were able tracer sources 15 N Cs) placed a distance farther than 0.4 annual crop strips. As result, reliance on layers for nutrient uptake by grown borders became greater compared mid-strips. Combination an cereal (winter rye) legume (alfalfa) having contrasting exhibited higher complementarity intercroppings more similar or absence legumes. Our results demonstrated that annuals, can induce vertical niche complementarity, especially layers. This was assumed be due differences rooting depth activity components, however, magnitude effects depended choice combinations, types tracers used study. • Perennials strips up Deep visible neighbouring plants separately plants. Exploitation of Nutrient-Rich Soil Patches by Invasive Annual and Native Perennial Grasses

Invasion of nutrient-poor habitats might be related to the ability of a species to exploit nutrient-rich microsites. Recent research suggests fast-growing species might have a greater ability to allocate root biomass to nutrient-rich microsites (root foraging precision) than slow-growing species. We examined if differences in relative growth rate (RGR) between invasive and native species were r...

Light Competition in Chinese Cabbage/Maize Strip Intercropping Systems

Due to drastic socio-economic changes traditional intercropping systems in China are endangered. New high yielding intercropping systems that can easily be mechanized have to be developed. By using environmental resources more efficiently intercropping often produces higher yields compared to monocropping. Solar radiation as the strongest growth factor plays a key role when designing new interc...

Intercropping studies with annual crops

This pape r tries to illustrate how beneficial interactions between crops can be exploited to increase the overall output of a cropping system. Growth studies with sorghum/pigeonpea and mil let /groundnut a re described to show how intercropping systems can achieve much larger yields than sole crops by using environmental resources more fully over t ime or more efficiently in space.
